Outlook 2007 backup/restore account settings / Offline registry mount

Outlook 2007 after HDD crash is problematic to restore – even when you have .pst files its asking to run whole account setup. My dirty way is assuming you have old hdd which you cannot boot but files from OS are still there.

Locate your old outlook.pst files on broken HDD – usually its located in c:UsersUSERNAMEAppDataLocalMicrosoftOutlook (NOTE: path can be different based on Windows you are using)

Install MS Office 2007. Don’t run Outlook yet.

Copy whole directory over to new install on you current drive. Next magic begin:

  1. You have all old outlook files in new user profile directory
  2. Now you need mount offline old registry settings for account setup, so

On Windows XP and Windows 2000 systems you can use REGEDIT to load hives, however on Windows NT and Windows 2000 systems this is only possible using REGEDT32.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE registry hive files are saved in %SYSTEMROOT%System32Config.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEM is saved as SYSTEM.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWARE is saved as SOFTWARE (this also contains HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT).

HKEY_CURRENT_USER is saved in %USERPROFILE%NTUSER.DAT.

  1. Login as a privileged account (probably and Administrator). Check Permissions
  2. Open the appropriate registry editor.
  3. Select the root of HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINENote: The Load Hive option is not available when most of the other hives are selected.
  4. In the menu click File -> Load Hive….
  5. Browse to the registry file you wish to load and click OK.
  6. When prompted for Key Name enter an easily identifiable name such as “temp”. This is the name of the temporary key under which the hive will be loaded.
  7. Expand HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE and locate the Key Name specified above.
  8. Browse through the loaded hive and make desired changes.
  9. When finished, click on the Key Name and in the menu choose File -> Unload Hive…. Note: Failing to unload the hive may have consequences such as preventing other processes from opening the file!
  1. Locate the following path in your ‘Registry Editor’ – TEMP HIVE you just created
  2. SOMETHINGYOUPUTHERESoftwareMicrosoftWindows NTCurrentVersionWindows Messaging SubsystemProfilesOutlook
  3. Now right click on the key outlook and select option: Export and save .reg files to your desired location. You can run the same file while restoring your outlook. This will restore your old outlook profile with all your email accounts settings and rules. You will need to enter your password as Password is not stored into .reg file.
  4. The you can unload HIVE via Menu in registry editor
  5. Import .reg file , just click on it. (NOTE: checkt path in reg file when you mount it under HKEY_USERS/temp you MUST IT CHANGE to HKEY_CURRENT_USER without temp.)

Start Outlook , all working OK 😉

ToDo: rewrite in m0ore details, put some pics.
